Review: Crayon Physics Deluxe

Despite such a simple premise, Crayon Physics Deluxe really delivers. In Crayon Physics, you use both physics and the objects that you create to manipulate the world and attempt to get a little red ball to the star(s) to pass each level. There are some impressively deep levels that force you to use your imagination in ways you never quite thought you would have to.

Many mainstream gamers would overlook this game, marking it as just a simple “casual game” for the casual gamers in the world. The truth is, this game is for anyone. It’s as complex and intelligent as you allow it to be. Most of the levels can be beaten within a few minutes after you get the grasp of the situation and get the right angle. However, if you want to spend an hour or more building some Rube Goldberg-type contraption to get to the objective, then that is what you can do.

The visuals in the game make it feel very simple, crisp and pretty, while the nice music keeps you calm and happy. The controls consist of clicking to draw your shape, and right-clicking to remove your created object. The game also supports touch-screen input, allowing you to literally draw your shapes with a stylus. Unfortunately we were not able to test this feature as we simply don’t have the proper hardware on hand.

The beauty of this game is that it comes with a level creator built into the game itself. So, if you do crave more exciting and seemingly impossible levels, then you are encouraged to do so. And, it gets even better with the area on Crayon Physics‘ website where you can upload your finished maps for others to download, or download other gamers’ maps for your own pleasure. Because of how simple and brilliant this little game is, it really is a triumph for indie gaming.
