LG Announces New Chocolate, Sets Sights on Overtaking Samsung

LG, formally #5 in the mobile phone market in 2007, now looks to overtake Samsung at #2 by 2012, according to a recent interview with LG’s president for mobile business. Having overtaken Sony Ericson and Motorola in the last couple of years, LG is looking to further expand to multiple areas of the mobile phone market. With a total of 80 phones planned for release in 2009, LG is aiming to release phones competing with Apple’s iPhone, Nokia’s luxury Vertu line, and HTC in the Android market. Included in this lineup is the next generation of LG’s bestselling Chocolate series, announced earlier this week and planned for release in August. Few details have been released about the phone, only that it will sport some sort of innovative screen.
While some might say that LG is spreading itself thin, attacking all of these markets at once, I have confidence that LG can get a foothold and I would not be surprised to see them overtake Samsung sooner than 2012. I’m especially excited to see what they plan for their Android phone as I feel that the market is already becoming stale with HTC’s nearly identical Dream (G1), Magic (myTouch), and Hero.
