Retro Review: Pokémon Yellow

In the late 1990′s a new craze swept through American youth, which I was lucky enough to be apart of. Starting with two Game Boy games, Pokémon soon became apart of a merchandising frenzy with it’s own trading cards, Anime television series and films, clothing, toys, CDs, and anything else you could imagine throwing a name on. Of all the products, the video games were where the true fun lied. Pokémon Yellow was the game I can remember putting the most hours into, making it the candidate for this month’s Retro Review.

Like the two Pokémon titles released in America before it, Pokémon Yellow shares the same simple gameplay style and same story line for the most part. Yellow, however, differed from the previous versions, as it incorporated elements from the popular anime television series.

The game begins with your character being stopped by a professor who gives you your first Pokémon, the infamous Pikachu. From here you basically go town to town with various stops along the way, battling and collecting more and more Pokémon. In other words, you move your character around and tire-sly battle Pokémon over and over.

Video games have changed drastically over the last 10 years, but I see this game nearly as amusing as it was back then. Despite the lack of amazing graphics and soundtrack, this game still manages to hold my attention, which is abig feat.
