Good friends Dave Delman and Tom Neiland turned a classic, gas guzzling DeLorean car into an all-electric vehicle. It uses a series of batteries which provide up to 156kW of power. That’s equivalent to about 200HP compared to the 130HP stock  combustion engine. A water-cooled motor controller was used to regulate the 156kW of power and for the motor itself, they used an air-cooled, series wound DC motor that weighs in at 175 lbs and measures 16 inches long and 9.25 inches in diameter. The car ranges around 30-40 miles on one charge and takes approximately 2-3 hours to charge up. It also has a top speed of over 85mph.

Overall, this electric wonder cost them a total of around $18,000. The car is still a work in progress and they hope to install a computerized dashboard and battery monitoring system soon. They’re also looking into lithium-ion batteries to increase the range to 100-200 miles on one charge.

I’m not sure about you, but Dr. Emmett Brown would probably be extremely jealous at this point, although this electric DeLorean doesn’t compare to the 1.21 gigawatts of the DeLorean time machine.
