The Weekly Olive: 1/11/10 – 1/17/10

This past week we had a little more laptop news than normal, possibly just some CES aftershocks taking place. We also had a very insightful, informative and witty editorial from Tim about finger mutilation. Yes, it’s quite the read. Join us after the break for the week’s recap.
Editorial: Do You Really Need That Extra Finger?
- As I sat here searching for something new to blame my low-scoring Modern Warfare 2 matches on (we can’t all continue to blame lag, or that new mouse), I figured why not blame myself? Now, I know what you’re thinking, and you’re wrong; I’m not admitting anything! You see, rather than actually admitting that someone is better than me, I am merely pointing out the uselessness of a gamer’s mouse-handed ring finger. Seriously, what do you use it for when gaming?
Asus Claims 12-Hour Battery Life in New High-End Laptop
- You’d be lucky to see your high-end laptop today push out 3 hours on a single charge, but Asus says it has a laptop that can do 12 hours. The UL80JT can do numerous micromanagement tasks like switching between the Nvidia GeForce 310 and the Intel GMA graphics when needed, and the Core i7 can re-clock itself on a second-to-second basis. All this is done automatically to conserve power, which is why Asus thinks that this sucker can push out a half-day of battery life.
MSI Expects 50% Increase in Notebook Shipments This Year
- According to MSI chairman Joseph Hsu, the company expects to ship approximately 50% more notebooks in 2010, while their all-in-one business PCs will follow suite. They plan to accomplish this by offering a vaster range of notebook models with different specifications instead of focusing on just a few models.
HP First to Ship Laptops with USB 3.0
- Right now you can get an HP Envy 15 laptop that comes with USB 3.0. Cool, huh? All you have to do is configure your Envy 15 to include ATI 5830 graphics and the Core i7 processor, which means that USB 3.0 is only available for certain configs at the moment, but definitely expect more models to sport the new USB technology in the near future.
