The popular, open source media player known as VLC is making a move towards using extensions when their 1.1 build releases. These extensions use a scripting language known as Lua, and can have many uses, like getting song lyrics and finding movie subtitles. As of right now, extension support is only available for nightly builds and the extension selection is extremely weak, with only one filling the list, but as time progresses, we should be hearing a lot more about this and see a growth in extensions.
