Mini Review: Snake Worlds

When I first read about Snake Worlds, it was a very intriguing idea: A simplistic remake of the original Snake game, but with a nice 3D twist and a spherical gameplay world. It was time to see how this modern remake of a classic game fares in today’s gaming world.

The 3D take of this classic game is a very interesting concept to experience, even for gamers who never got around to playing the original. Snake Worlds seems like a game best played in short bursts, but no doubt in a nod to its vintage roots. There is no saving system, just a set of lives and no “Continue,” so that plays counter to bite-sized gameplay experiences, but doesn’t make casual playing of the game impossible. A nice perk is the game’s online leaderboards that allow you to compete with the rest of the game’s audience. However, it seems to hang and even freeze your PC to a certain extent for a little while as it uploads your high score to the leaderboard.

Each world is made up of several levels, each getting progressively difficult as you progress through them. Each level is filled with obstacles, food, and power-ups for you to collect or avoid in order to pass the level. There is also a timer element which will give you a points bonus if you complete the level quickly. Though the game can feel a bit simplistic, that’s not entirely a bad thing. At any rate, it’s a game that’s easy to pick up and play in short bursts and it doesn’t hurt that it was designed with netbooks and mini PCs in mind, so portability is a plus.
While the game is not stellar, it does make a good time-killer when you’re on the go and have grown tired of Windows cheating every time you play Hearts against it. Be sure to checkout the game’s homepage if you want to play the free demo or buy the game for yourself and support the indie developers!
Overall: 5 Olives
