We know that the floppy disk is already somewhat dead and useless thanks to CDs, DVDs, flash drives, and other newer portable storage technologies, but Sony is the only company that is still making the damn things, but that’s about to change. According to the Mainichi Daily News, Sony has announced that they will end production of 3.5-inch floppy disks in March 2011, officially killing the floppy disk once and for all. Sony’s sales of floppy disks have plummeted from 47 million disks in 2002 to a measly 12 million in 2009. Computer makers have been shying away from floppy disk drives since 2003, and Apple was the first to banish the use of floppies in their machines in 1998.

Speaking of floppy disks, who here still uses them?

There was a DIY article in Popular science a while back showing how to make a pretty nifty pencil holder out of them. :P
