The Weekly Olive: 10/18/10 – 10/24/10

The past week’s best news and featured content you might have missed, as well as a preview of the week ahead…

Trine 2 Confirmed for Release on PC, Coming Spring 2011
- After it was detailed at E3 2010, it seemed like a no-brainer that Trine 2 would be heading to the PC, especially after the first Trine hit PC before the consoles. However, PC gamers usually have to hold their breath nowadays and pray that their favorite devs bring games to the PC. You can finally get rid of that brown paper bag because developer Frozenbyte and publisher Atlus have officially confirmed that Trine 2 will be making its way to PC in Spring 2011.

OliveCast #11 – Respect the Articles

The OliveCast is at it once again and as expected, we discuss (translation: I discuss) Apple’s “Back to the Mac” Event, as well as talk about Window 7′s recent birthday. We then finish up with an update on Call of Duty: Black Ops and give you a preview of what we’re going to review these next few weeks. Sadly, our special guest was busy so we couldn’t get a third person to join us, but we’re hoping to have him on board next time.

Review Revisited: Far Cry 2

Far Cry 2 was not only the first game that I reviewed here on Tech Olive, but it was also my very first article on these holy pages (Fun Fact: This also marks my 1,000th post for Tech Olive). Since then, I had felt the need to go back and write a proper review for the game. Well, here we are, two years later to the day and it’s time to revisit and rewrite that review with all the experience points knowledge I have gained over the past two years of writing for Tech Olive. As luck would have it, this also marks the first time I’ve sat down and played the game since that review. Without further introduction, let the show begin.

The OliveCast is Returning This Weekend!

It’s that time of the month again (teeheehee) and The OliveCast will be making another return to your speakers this weekend. You won’t want to miss this one, folks. We’ll be talking about none other than Apple’s “Back to the Mac” Event, but that’s not all! We’ll also be discussing Windows 7′s first birthday and reminiscing over the great OS by Microsoft, as well as provide an update on any recent Call of Duty: Black Ops news. Who knows, maybe we’ll have a special guest joining us, but don’t bust out that chisel just yet. What you can do though is stay tuned in this weekend for another episode of The OliveCast!

By the way, how do you like our new OliveCast logo?

Amazon and GameStop have had Call of Duty: Black Ops available for pre-order for a few weeks now, but if you were waiting for the digital download, your wait is over because Steam now has Treyarch’s upcoming shooter available for pre-order. As of now, there is no pre-order bonus for users who pre-order the game through Steam.

An anonymous reader asked on our Formspring:

“What’s a good program for remote access?”

Personally, I’m a huge fan of TeamViewer. It has all the bells and whistles including a standalone version that you can run off of a flash drive and they even have an iPhone app. Best of all, it’s user friendly, which most other remote access programs lack. All you do is make sure that TeamViewer is running on your PC, as well as the other PC that you want to access remotely. Then just enter in the ID (each PC has its own unique ID) as well as the temporary password (or permanent password if you have that set up). Then just hit “Connect” and you should be able to see and control the remote PC’s desktop. Try it out and tell us what you think!

“I’m Batman.” No, not really, but that’s what you feel like when you play Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Asylum. Steam has the Game of the Year Edition on sale for 66% off, which means you can own the game for only $13.60. Not only do you get the game itself, but you also get 4 extra Challenge Maps. Sounds good to me! If you’re still debating whether $13.60 will actually get you a good game, check our full review and hopefully that will help you come to a satisfying conclusion.

I’m sitting here typing up this post while my roommates are watching the classic FX sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but in two separate rooms. Naturally, there’s a slight delay between the two TVs. So as one roommate laughs, the other follows two seconds later. Classic indeed.

Anyway, here’s some news that didn’t quite make the daily cut to a dedicated news post, but still worthy of a quick mention!

- Sorry older Mac users, but the new iLife ’11 suite won’t work unless you have Snow Leopard. Oh, and your Snow Leopard machine must be an Intel one.

- All Things D is reporting that Hulu is thinking about slashing their Plus subscription service in half, to $4.95/month. It looks like word is finally getting around to them that $10/month for Hulu Plus isn’t worth it.

- It seems that Apple doesn’t want you poking around with the new MacBook Air. The thing comes fully-loaded with proprietary hardware. All the way down to the screws.

- The first Football Manager 2011 demo is up on Steam. Play it while it’s hot.

- Last, but not least, your car needs this.

Can you believe it’s only been a year since Windows 7 released? It feels like it’s been way longer than that. To celebrate, Microsoft is having their own little birthday party and they’ll cry if they want to — cry out their sales numbers (that was bad, I know). Redmond has sold over 240 million copies since the OS released one year ago.

It’s been a good first year and a lot of memories were created. I still remember the first time I loaded up Windows 7 Ultimate on my desktop. That was a good day.

What about you guys? What are some memories of Windows 7 that you’ve captured over this past year?
