It’s not enough to say that Facebook was the most visited website of 2010. We’re also curious as to what pirates were searching for in 2010 on torrent sites. Unsurprisingly enough, “inception” was the most searched term on torrent sites during the past year.”Iron man 2″ came in at number 2 and “2010″ in third place. “XXX” and “porn” placed fourth and ninth, respectively. To see the entire top 100 list, hit up the link below.

For the first time ever, Facebook has been named the most visited website of the year for 2010, raking in more hits than Google, Yahoo and YouTube. Last year Facebook was the third most visited behind Google and Yahoo Mail. The term “facebook” was also the most searched term in 2010.

AOL Spent $300 Million on Those Promo CDs

Remember those annoying AOL promotional CDs that were a dime a dozen back in the day? I know I have a shoe box full of those CDs laying around somewhere. Apparently, AOL spent quite a few dollars on those discs. Former AOL CMO Jan Brandt said that AOL spent over $300 million dollars making and sending out all of those discs. At one point, “50% of the CDs produced worldwide had an AOL logo on it.”

But did this marketing campaign work? Yup:

“When we went public in 1992 we had less than 200,000 subscribers; a decade later the number was in the 25 million range.” — AOL co-founder Steve Case.

“We were logging in new subscribers at the rate of one every six seconds.” — AOL CMO Jan Brandt.

The Bargain Bin: Steam Holiday Sale

The Bargain Bin is a weekly feature that helps out gamers in this tough economy. How does it help? Once a week, it offers a great and cheap game ($10 or less) to keep you going until your next paycheck.

Because there’s a chance that some of you still don’t know about this, and because Steam’s discounts are still completely embarrassing every other digital distribution service with these Holiday sales, we really had no choice but to remind you of Steam’s sales with this week’s Bargain Bin.

Bejeweled 3: Testing Out Binaural Beats

One of the most interesting additions to the improved and revamped Bejeweled 3 was its Zen Mode that allows you to enjoy endless traditional Bejeweled gameplay while letting you choose from several relaxing sounds and messages to play while you…play. Among these choices of relaxing and mood-altering sounds was the offering of “binaural beats.” This intrigued me. In short, binaural beats are sounds that are engineered to subconsciously alter your mood,  feelings, or even some thought patterns. (For more info, check out the Wiki page.) It’s all very zen.

Having heard some success stories from this technology in the past, but never trying it for myself, I figured Bejeweled 3 is as good a time as any for my first foray into the unknown. Tag along for some in-depth testing and perhaps even some enlightening and surprising results.

This isn’t too much of a surprise since a lot of hardware is limited using firmware and software tweaks, but it’s been discovered that AMD’s Radeon HD 6950 can basically be turned into a HD 6970 with a flip of a switch. The guys over at techPowerUp show how you can take your HD 6950 and unleashed its true potential. Obviously, there’s a word of warning attached to this little hack. It’ll void your warranty and you should be aware that the actual HD 6970 uses an 8-pin and a 6-pin connector for its power, while the HD 6950 only has two 6-pin connectors. This could possibly cause troubles if you max out the card while the hack is being taken advantage of.

The Weekly Olive: 12/20/10 – 12/26/10

The past week’s best news and featured content that you might have missed…

Call of Duty: Black Ops First Map Pack Detailed
- Black Ops‘ first map pack, titled “First Strike”, has been announced as an unsurprising $15 timed Xbox 360 exclusive, with PC release probably following about a month later. It’s unclear at this point whether PC gamers will be getting the new maps for free or not. If history (MW2) is any indication, we’ll no doubt be paying $15 as well through Steam, but we can still dream.
