Retro Review: Nerf Arena Blast

Back in the early days of first-person shooters, it took a lot to peel me away from games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark 64 and Wolfenstein 3D, but Nerf Arena Blast (NAB) was one of the few games that managed to do it. I decided it was time to install the 328MB, hard drive-eating, Unreal engine-based monstrosity.

For this month’s Mamba Files, I decided to combine my Winter-Een-Mas gaming marathon with a Mamba battery life test. It was a tall order considering the fact that Razer claims the Mamba will last up to 14 hours of heated gaming, but I was up for the task.

Mini Review: Zero Gear (PC)

When we first heard of Zero Gear, we were pleasantly surprised. From early previews, it was hard to believe that someone was finally making a Mario Kart-themed racer. It seemed that they captured what made Mario Kart great and managed to bring it to gamers with a fresh look and design. Like Mario Kart, Zero Gear focuses heavily on combat and weapons to win the race. However, it does offer more than just circuit-race gametypes.

Elementum Demo Impressions

ele0

A pack of developers have sought our “expert” journalism skills for their newest game, Elementum. It’s very much in the vein of Peggle and other such casual, brightly-colored 2D combination-based Tetris-born games. As such, the game is equally as entertaining as it is confusing and unique.

Mini Review: Zombie Driver

When we first saw Zombie Driver there was a unanimous sigh and we thought, “not another zombie game.” However, we were pleasantly surprised when we found Zombie Driver to be a fresh take on the genre. Definitely a change from the usual zombie shooters being churned out by any developer with a decent shooter engine.

In the past, we’ve reviewed our fair share of hardware from Razer. Today, we’re doing things a little differently. Razer sent us three of their premiere gaming mice and we’re going to do an in-depth evaluation of the Mamba, Orochi and Imperator. We’ll be putting each mouse through its paces to see where it performs best and which mouse is greatest for any given type of gamer. At the end of it all, we’ve got a surprise, so don’t miss that! (If you cheat by skipping to the end, you officially suck)

Retro Review: Nintendo Game Boy

GameBoy

Typically our monthly retro reviews are games. I decided to mix it up a bit this time and review some retro hardware. The Nintendo Game Boy was an 8-bit handheld wonder that was released here in the United States in the summer of 1989. A million units were sold within just a few weeks of release and packaged with the Game Boy was everyone’s favorite Soviet video game, Tetris.

Review: DiRT2 (PC)

DIRT_2_Logo_final

The newest creation from Codemasters has us going off-road with the second installment of the DiRT series. Continuing on with the Colin McRae name, Codemasters built upon the first DiRT and made one of the most impressive rally video game to date. DiRT2 has many of the same traits that you’ll find in GRID, which is Codemasters’ other racing game that takes place on the tarmac. Similar traits include graphics, physics and the achievement system. So essentially, think of GRID, but in an off-road, in-your-face environment.
