Crysis 2 Internal Beta Build Leaked

More than a month prior to the game’s planned release date, it seems an early, near-complete internal beta build of Crysis 2 has leaked to torrent sites across the Internet. According to reports, the leaked beta features a complete singleplayer experience and a multiplayer element that can be played with a little tweaking. Granted, these experiences are said to be riddled with bugs, performance issues, and missing textures.

EA released the following statement on the matter:

“Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites. Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22. Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series’ signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion. Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community.”

Of course, this raises concerns about how this leak will affect the game’s retail release and also starts a new “piracy is killing gaming” argument with all-new fuel for the flames. While we’re not going to argue for one side or the other, it is worth noting that this still all traces back to a breach in Crytek’s security. So perhaps they should take a look in the mirror before blaming PC gamers for taking advantage of the opportunity.

I know we’re all excited about the release of Crysis 2, but do you think your rig will even be able to play the game? The minimum system requirements for Crysis 2 were revealed on the official German Crysis Facebook page and Nvidia was nice enough to translate them and post it on their site. See them below.

  • OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, AMD Athlon 64 x2 2Ghz or better
  • 2 GB RAM
  • HDD: 9 GB
  • DVD ROM: 8x
  • GPU: NVIDIA 8800 GT 512MB Ram or better
  • Audio DirectX 9.0c compatible

They’re actually not that bad. I would say most gaming machines nowadays will be able to at least play Crysis 2. Hopefully the upcoming MP demo will give you a better idea.

Crysis 2 Demo Coming to PC Afterall

Last week, EA announced that the multiplayer demo for Crysis 2 would only be available for the Xbox 360, which frustrated PC gamers around the world, as well as PS3 owners. However, the official Crysis Twitter page mentioned today that the demo will be headed to the PC platform afterall.

“At this time, Crytek & EA are glad to confirm that we’ll be releasing a pre-launch Crysis 2 multiplayer demo on PC! Stay tuned for details.”

We’ll fill you in on those details as they come in.

Crysis 2 Demo Not Coming to PC

Well, it seems that EA isn’t living up to its recent acquisition of CampaignforPCGaming.com just yet, which means that the publisher isn’t going to give PC gamers a multiplayer demo of the upcoming sci-fi shooter Crysis 2. If it makes you feel any better, PS3 gamers aren’t getting the demo either, which means that it’s exclusive to the Xbox 360 (more specifically, Xbox Live Gold).

Crysis 2 is still set for release for all platforms on March 22nd, 2011 in North America and March 25th, 2011 in Europe.

Crytek’s upcoming sequel of Crysis will be available for not only the PC, but also the Xbox 360 and PS3. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli commented on the differences of PCs and consoles in the newest issue of Edge Magazine:

“PC is easily a generation ahead right now. With 360 and PS3, we believe the quality of the games beyond Crysis 2 and other CryEngine developments will be pretty much limited to what their creative expressions is, what the content is. You won’t be able to squeeze more juice from these rocks.”

However, the Crytek CEO stated that the poor quality of PC games nowadays isn’t necessarily to be blamed on consoles, but rather the developers.

“I generally think it’s still developers’ mentality [that is to blame]. A lot [of developers] nowadays don’t consider PC a big issue any more; their [sales] expectations are nowhere near what they are for the console versions. Until the PC market creates comparable revenues, companies are not going to spend enough on the PC SKU of a game.”

We already know that Crysis 2 is coming, but what about further installments of the sci-fi shooter? According to executive producer Nathan Camarillio, Crytek is planning on making Crysis a “long-running” franchise that will rank up there with Call of Duty.

“We say why not? … As the franchise grows down the line, there’s no reason it can’t be as big [as Call of Duty] … It’s in our best interest to grow Crysis into a very long-running franchise. Maybe that means Crysis 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9…Crysis Infinity.”

There you have it, folks. We now know that several more installments of Crysis are on the way. It’s only a matter of how they’ll be titled. Will they stick with the traditional way of simply numbering them? Or will they do what CoD is doing and name each game something unique?
