In the unlikely event that Facebook isn’t good enough at eating all of your free time, Warner Bros. has announced plans to offer a movie rental system through the massively popular social networking site.

How will it work? After you “Like” the movie’s page, you can then purchase a 48-hour rental of the movie for 30 Facebook credits (equivalent to $3). The system went live this week with the first title being The Dark Knight. Warner promises many more titles for rental and purchase through Facebook soon.

The Super Bowl ain’t just about football, folks. It’s also about the commercials, and we saw one from Chevrolet that shows off their new Cruze with the ability to read back Facebook status updates to the driver. That’s all they showed in the thirty-second clip, but we’re guessing you can also update your Facebook status through the system as well. Seems cool, but will Chevy Cruze users really be that addicted to Facebook for the need to check their status updates while driving? It’s very possible, and I guess in this case, seeing if your first date went well is worth the feature. Check out the commercial after the break.

Enable HTTPS to Stay Safe on Facebook

This won’t solve any of the privacy issues that Facebook’s been accused of by any means, but by enabling HTTPS (S = Secure) in your Facebook settings, you can prevent hackers from logging into your account if you happen to be in a public place with an open connection.

From the Facebook homepage after logging in, click on Account in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Then click Account Settings. Click the change button to right of Account Security and check the box that says Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) whenever possible. Hit Save and you’re good to go. Now, whenever you log in and surf Facebook, it will be over an encrypted connection.

During last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a quick appearance during actor Jesse Eisenberg’s (The Social Network) opening monologue. SNL veteran Andy Samberg first came out dressed up as Zuckerberg claiming he was the real deal, but then the CEO himself finally jumped on stage, which sparked a comedically awkward conversation between Zuck and Eisenberg. Watch the complete opening monologue after the jump.

We knew the movie was amazing, but what did the Golden Globes think? The Social Network was nominated for six Globes and won four:

  • Best Original Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross)
  • Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin)
  • Best Director (David Fincher)
  • Best Picture, Drama

Have you seen the movie? What did you think?

Facebook is Most Visited Website of 2010

For the first time ever, Facebook has been named the most visited website of the year for 2010, raking in more hits than Google, Yahoo and YouTube. Last year Facebook was the third most visited behind Google and Yahoo Mail. The term “facebook” was also the most searched term in 2010.

We’re not really sure what Time Magazine was thinking when they named Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as their Person of the Year for 2010, but they say it’s because of his work for “connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives.” Thing is, he accomplished that a whole six years ago when Zuckerberg created Facebook. This year, he didn’t really do a lot besides watch the numbers increase. Way to be late to the party, Time Magazine. Then again, a movie was made in his honor, which was insanely good. That might have had something to do with it.

Anyone else think that the headshot of Zuckerberg on the cover looks a little creepy?

Facebook’s holding another event? They just had one not too long ago (yeah, the one where Zuckerberg called the iPad “a computer”). We can clearly see that the invite hints at something to do with messaging. TechCrunch thinks that Facebook is launching it’s own little email client that apparently has been in the works since February and is referred to as a “Gmail killer” internally.

We’d love to see them try.

Today, Facebook held an event to discuss their mobile presence. They basically ended up announcing big updates to the iPhone and Android apps. However, during the Q&A session, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked if a Facebook iPad app would be on its way. Here’s what went down:

Attendee: So, the iPad has been out for a while — are you building an iPad app?
Zuckerberg: The iPad’s not mobile. Next question.
Attendee: I think Apple would disagree.
Zuckerberg: It’s a computer. Sorry. (laughter)
Erick Tseng: The broader question is ‘how do we scale to a tablet form factor without locking ourselves in?’
Zuckerberg: I don’t want to be rude to Apple — we all love Apple products — but this is a mobile event and we want to stay focused on that. The iPad isn’t mobile in the same way.

Thoughts?
