If you’re familiar with the Palm mobile brand, then you undoubtedly know about the webOS mobile operating system for smartphones and tablets. HP (who owns Palm) announced today at their “Think Beyond” webOS event that the mobile operating system is coming to PCs and printers later this year. Sadly, that’s all the details that were given, but we’ll definitely hear more from HP as the days go on.

HP Releases Envy 17 3D Laptop

For all those 3D junkies out there (I bet there are a ton of you), HP has added a 17-inch 3D supported model to their Envy series of laptops. The base model is priced at $1,599 and comes with an Intel Core i7, AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5850, 6GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 500GB HDD. Oh, and it wouldn’t be complete without the active shutter 3D glasses.

I’m still not seeing the point of 3D technology in consumer products. Yeah, it’s awesome in the IMAX, but the lasting appeal for 3D in everyday products only lasts a certain while until you’re going to want to switch back to 2D.

HP Slate Seen in the Wild

The guys over at Connecti.ca have apparently gotten their hands on the HP Slate, with photos and all. They did a short mini review and “the official verdict is ‘meh’”. It’s no iPad killer and all it really is is a touchscreen netbook, which means it’s not extremely fast and responsive. However, it does have Flash and a camera, as well as USB and HDMI ports.

Again, the 32GB HP Slate will sell for $549 and the 64GB version will cost $599. Both sport a 8.9-inch, multitouch display at 1024 x 600. The internals include a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, Intel integrated graphics, and 1GB of non-expandable RAM.

The guys over at Engadget were able to get a hold of an image from what looks to be a presentation given to HP employees. The image pretty much says it all about the upcoming HP tablet. It’ll have an 8.9-inch touchscreen display at 1024×600 and sport a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 with 1GB of non-upgradeable RAM. It’ll also have 32GB of storage, Intel UMA graphics, accelerator for 1080p playback, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, SIM slot for 3G, SDHC memory slot, a USB port, headphone jack, a dock connector for power, audio, and HDMI, 3MP webcam, and a 5-hour battery life. As far as the software side, it’ll be running Windows 7 Home Premium with HP’s touch-optimized UI.

The base model will cost $549, while the upper-level model with 64GB of storage will be $599. Hopefully HP has something awesome up their sleeve with this device, especially since the iPad set the bar really high.

HP Unveils Multitouch Android Netbook

It’s not everyday we see a netbook with the Android operating system and a multitouch display. HP seems to be the first to accomplish this feat by introducing the Airlife 100. What’s even better is that it’s said to accomplish an amazing 12-hour battery life. The rest of the specs include a 1.0GHz Snapdragon CPU, Wi-Fi, 3G, a 16GB SSD, and the obvious webcam and SD card slot. HP says they’re only releasing it in Spain for now, but hopefully we’ll see it here in the states soon.

Acer has been talking the talk recently, but they have yet to walk the walk. The company fell behind in sales by shipping 9.5 million notebooks in Q4 2009. HP, on the other hand, shipped almost 11.4 million notebooks. This widens the gap by 900,000 laptops compared to the previous quarter. HP is planning to ship 44 million notebooks in 2010 and Acer is wanting to focus on ultra-thin notebooks to increase shipments beyond its original 40 million goal to keep up with HP.

HP First to Ship Laptops with USB 3.0

Right now you can get an HP Envy 15 laptop that comes with USB 3.0. Cool, huh? All you have to do is configure your Envy 15 to include ATI 5830 graphics and the Core i7 processor, which means that USB 3.0 is only available for certain configs at the moment, but definitely expect more models to sport the new USB technology in the near future.

Microsoft and HP Form Partnership

The CEOs of both Microsoft and HP (Steve Ballmer and Mark Hurd, respectively) announced earlier today that they would be forming a tight partnership with each other and will apparently surpass the already tight friendship that the two companies have had in the past. They plan on spending $250 million over the next three years on engineering, sales and marketing. The two execs were so excited to tell everyone about this super-awesome partnership, that they really didn’t give any meaty details except for the fact that Microsoft will basically blow off other manufacturers like Dell, IBM and Cisco and lead consumers over to HP. That’s what we’re basically seeing, at least. Thankfully, you can view a little more details about this over at Microsoft TechNet.

HP Revolutionizes Home Printing

hp-photosmart-premium-touchsmart

Imagine printing maps, coupons, and movie tickets from home. Nothing new right? Now imagine doing it without the use of a home computer.

That’s what HP had in mind for the future of home printing when it announced today the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web all-in-one printer. Using the same technology HP implements in its Touchsmart tablet PCs and desktops, the user will be able to navigate the features of the printer through a built in 4.33″ touchscreen (about 80% bigger than that of an iPhone).

Included applications will allow for web browsing, direct integration with SnapFish (HP’s web based photo sharing service), and more. In addition, free applications developed by Google, Fandango, Coupons.com, and other industry leaders will be available for download upon release, with more to come. Moreover, sometime after release users and third-party developers will be given the opportunity to create and share their own applications through HP Apps Studio.

Other features include WiFi, Bluetooth®, iPhone/iPod Touch compatibility and automatic two-sided printing, with unconfirmed rumors of multi-touch capability. The PhotoSmart Premium is slated for release this fall at the target price of $399.
