At Google’s secret Android press conference that was held today, the company officially announced their newest smartphone, the Nexus One. We saw this coming from a mile away, but it’s nice that Google doesn’t have to keep quiet about it anymore (trying to keep it quiet anyway). In essence, the phone was way over-hyped and it basically turned out to be just another Android device, but we’ll bring you the complete lowdown on the device soon anyway.

The fellas over at Engadget were able to get a hold of the Nexus One before anyone else. We’re guessing they probably did “something special” to have this exclusivity, but we won’t go into that.

Overall, the phone seems to be a pretty decent device, but nothing spectacular. It’s definitely not an iPhone killer and there’s really no major enhancements in the UI compared to other Android devices. Most of the rumors we’ve been hearing have been true to their word though. It runs Android 2.1, has a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 3.7-inch display, 512MB of RAM, a 5MP camera, a 4GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB), and runs on the T-Mobile network, but doesn’t work on AT&T 3G.

We’ve already heard a lot about the Nexus One and we’ll probably keep hearing more about it. We’ve decided to roundup all the useful information and images and put them in this one convenient post. As you can probably assume, most of the information is rumor since Google nor HTC have made an official announcement and no specs have been officially released. However, that’s one thing we love about rumors — they get us talking and can be very insightful and revealing. We’ll be updating this post periodically when more information/photos arrive so be sure check back every now and then. Join us after the break for the goods.

More Nexus One Details Leaked, This is it

nexus-one-landing-page

This has to be the cream of crop right here. This phone is definitely real and will be available to the public (unlike previous speculations of being just a developer phone). The leaked content tells us that Google will be the only seller of the Nexus One and it’ll sell for $530 unlocked and unsubsidized. You can also get the phone for $180 after signing a 2-year contract with T-Mobile. Looks like AT&T is out of the picture on this one, although it’ll probably still work on their network. There’s also going to be just one plan, which is $80/month, but if you still want to keep your cheap plan, you’ll have to pay the unsubsidized price of $530.

Google will sell the phone via http://www.google.com/phone and it will apparently be officially called the Nexus One, not the Google Phone (the Google Phone was a lame name anyway).

Thanks to Engadget, you can view the entire Nexus One Terms of Sale here.

Just like in the rumors about the Nexus One arriving on January 5th, Google has officially announced an Android press conference for that date. Could it be that they’ll be unveiling the Nexus One smartphone then? It’s likely.

The Nexus One: Google’s New Smartphone

google-nexus-one

The most recent rumor flying around in these here parts is a big one. Apparently this is Google’s new phone, the Nexus One (which is what it’s being referred as, but that’s not the official name we don’t think). Designed by Google and manufactured by HTC, it sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, a Snapdragon processor running on Android 2.1 and features a 5.0 MP camera along with two microphones to assist in noise cancellation. The phone will be sold by Google as an unlocked, carrier independent device and it’s said that phone will work with T-Mobile and AT&T (Verizon shot it down). Rumor originally got around when the phones were handed out to Google employees, which were then tweeted about.

It’s said that the Nexus One will be releasing in January 2010 and leaked photos have already shown up in multiple places (including the one above), but Google has yet to make an official announcement even though they posted about something on their blog.

This is quite a big leap for Google. If they’re going to enter the smartphone war this late in the game, they better be pulling off something extraordinary if they want to compete with the iPhone, BlackBerry and the other Android devices. Many are saying it could be the next iPhone killer, but we aren’t going that far out of our way to call it that just yet.

UPDATE: Engadget now has exclusive photos of the Nexus One. They’re much clearer and say a lot more about the device. The main thing is seeing that it’s running Android 2.1 like we mentioned earlier, but it looks very similar to 2.0.

UPDATE: Boy Genius Report has a couple of high res photos!
