While it does has many faults, the skies look promising for this budding system.

Windows 7 RC May Be Coming

windows7

We hope you enjoyed the clever, yet cheesy pun in the title because according to Microsoft’s Parters website, an RC of Windows 7 could very well be on its way the first week of May (do you get it now?). May 7 is Windows 7 Virtual Partner Readiness Day, which could very well mean the next giant leap for Windows 7 is coming then. We’ll see.

Windows 7 RC1 Coming This May

windows7

According to Microsoft’s website, the company will issue a public release candidate of Windows 7 in May. The RC release will be available at least through June 2009 and Microsoft is not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time to grab a copy.

Microsoft decided to lift the download limit altogether after their servers crashed from the January rush of the Windows 7 Beta. Microsoft thinks that this unlimited factor will hopefully prevent server crashes from happening again.

Windows 7 RC1 will also have an extended expiration date compared to the beta. The release candidate will not expire until June 1, 2010.

A recent rumor has Microsoft thinking about giving Windows Vista users a free upgrade to Windows 7 come December 2009. The catch? Users must own a PC with Vista pre-installed, and the system must come with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). The upgrade only apples to Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate, which can then be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate respectively. Finally, Microsoft says the program does not support multiple upgrades for medium, large, or enterprise customers, according to the document.

Six Windows 7 Editions, Count ‘Em

windows7

Microsoft did what no one wanted them to do. They made too many versions of the new Windows 7 operating system. After people were complaining about Vista having the same useless feature, you would think Microsoft listened. There will be six SKUs (or versions) of Windows 7. They are listed as follows:

Windows 7 Outperforms Vista and XP

Forget benchmarking utilities. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes from ZDNet put together 23 real-world scenarios to see which operating system would be the quickest to complete the tasks. He tested the 32-bit versions of Windows 7 build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows XP SP3.  He tested all three OSs on two different rigs:

  • An AMD Phenom 9700 2.4GHz system with an ATI Radeon HD3850 and 4GB of RAM
  • An Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2GHz with an NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS and 1GB of RAM

Windows 7 managed to outperform both Vista and XP on both. Kingsley’s scoring system was to give a 1 to the OS that finished each test first, a 2 for second place, and a 3 for third. The results were as follows (Lowest score wins obviously):

Windows 7 – 50 combined points

Windows Vista – 109 combined points

Windows XP – 117 combined points

The results are unbelievable in my opinion. Let’s hope that it’s true though. Windows 7 still has a while yet before the final release is done, and many things could change since then. More than likely those changes will be for the good.
